New Additions at 2013 Water Follies

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The excitement is building for the upcoming Water Follies and this year some new additions are sure to make for some great entertainment.

From a new hydroplane class to some impressive planes for the air show, there will be lots to see at Columbia Park in Kennewick. This year, the Water Follies have something new to offer for fans whether the hydroplane races are your favorite or the air show.

1 liter boats will join the races for the first time. They are smaller than the unlimited boats, but they make for an exciting race to watch with typically neck and neck races.

"They have water craft engines in them. They travel greater than 100 piles per hour. They're just a fun little boat to watch," said Kathy Powell, Water Follies Event Director.

"Everybody is so competitive and so close in speed and in their technology that, I mean, really no matter where we go on the race course it could be anyone's race," said Josh Culver, 1 liter boat driver.

Shifting your eyes from the water to the sky, the air show is sure to amaze with tricks and booming noise.

"Three World War II era aircraft, we also have three aerobatic aircraft, which are small planes that will perform some pretty violent stunts in the sky. Then we have our Alpha Jet," said Scott Meyer, air show director.

"Only a hand full of some of these planes flying so to have them all together in one air show is very significant so it'll be quite a treat for everybody," Powell said.

The first ever appearance of the spitfire plane carries with it a special piece of hydroplane history.

"It is the original possessor of the Merlin B-12 engine, which is the engine that powered the early hydroplanes. The one that most of the hydroplane fans identify with, that big piston sound," Meyer said.

Another fun thing to check out at the park will be a gigantic ice cube you'll be able to go inside to cool off from the heat.

The Sparkling Ice flavored water sponsor will bring that into the park for people to chill in and sample drinks.

With these temperatures outside, it is really starting to feel like summer. This means you might be getting the boat ready to take out on the water. In order to have fun in the sun, you'll want to make sure your boat is safe and your passengers will be too. Today we stopped by the 19th Annual Boat and RV show to get some tips from the Benton County Sheriffs and Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers. They say you should take inventory of your boat to see if anything may have gotten lost ...More >>
