Cowell Ties Course Record To Grab Rosauers Lead

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Matt Cowell set a blistering pace on a hot day at Indian Canyon G.C., firing an opening-round 61 (10-under par) in Friday's first round of play at the Rosauers Open Invitational. The 61 was good enough to tie the course record and give Cowell a three-stroke lead at the end of the first day.

Defending champion David Phay, of Whidbey Golf & Country Club, had a 33 going through the first nine holes.  His play only improved on the back nine, closing with a 31 for an opening round 64.  He sits in a tie for second place with Meridian Valley's Brian Thornton (7-under par).

Corey Prugh, of Manito Golf & Country Club in Spokane, is attempting to become the second golfer in the 21-year history of the Rosauers Open Invitational to win a third championship. The 2011 & 2009 champion shot a 34 on the front nine and started the back nine with back-to-back pars on the par-4 10th and par-3 11th.  He finished the round at 4-under par 67, part of a 7-way tie for eighth place.

Proceeds of the Rosauers Open Invitational go to the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Last year's event raised $135,000.
