Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Wash.-- Seven people face federal drug charges after the investigation of a Franklin County poppy farm.

A federal grand jury filed several charges against seven people alleging they "knowingly and intentionally" distributed a controlled substance. In this case, opium poppies.

Earlier this month, DEA agents cleared 20 acres of poppies from a Franklin County farm owned by Kenneth and Shanna French.

They face several counts of distributing a controlled substance.

Kyle French and Shane French also face conspiracy charges for their involvement.

In a separate indictment, Kenneth French and three other men are charged with possession with intent to distribute opium poppies.

"This is a very unique investigation and it's going to require a lot of work from the U.S. Attorney's Office and all the investigators assigned to make sure we have a successful resolution and justice is served," said Trevor White, Tri-City Drug Task Force.

So far, the suspects have been assigned defense attorneys and they are not in custody as they await their trial.

Sources tell NBC Right Now this case could be the second in the U.S. involving the distribution of opium poppies.
