RICHLAND, Wash. -- Kindergartners will stay at school for the entire school day at Jefferson Elementary this fall.
State funding to implement these changes was given to schools based on their free and reduced lunch percentages; Jefferson Elementary is one of those schools. Approximately 60% of Jefferson students qualify for free and reduced lunch; the highest poverty percentage of all elementary schools in the Richland School District.
As of this school year, 44% of Washington state kindergartners will attend full-day classes. By the 2017-2018 school year, all elementary schools in Washington will offer full-day kindergarten.
Jefferson kindergarten students will follow the same schedule as the 1st through 5th graders. School will begin at 8:45 a.m. and end at 3:15 p.m..
Kindergartners will participate in physical education, art, library, music and lunch, just like the older students do.
Since this is a voluntary program, parents can request a transfer to another school if they don't want their child to attend kindergarten for a full day.
