Yakima Police Unveil New SWAT Vehicle

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima Police Department unveiled its new SWAT vehicle Wednesday.

It will replace the swat team's old vehicle, which was a military surplus from the Vietnam era. The new unit is only about a decade old. The department says the original vehicle did not work well and would often break down. The new one will be more reliable, and offers other bonuses as well.

"Using the V150, we couldn't fit personnel in it, it had limited speeds, where this can travel highway speeds, we can get enough personnel to at least get them on the ground," said Yakima Police Sergeant Gary Jones.

The vehicle cost $127,000. The city council allocated the money for the police department.

The older vehicle is still owned by the military, and will go back into their surplus program.
