Crews Clean Toxic Spill on Columbia Center Blvd. in Kennewick

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Department of Ecology crews were forced to shut down a busy intersection Thursday while cleaning up a toxic spill.

The southbound lanes of Columbia Center Boulevard and Quinault Avenue were closed until about 12:30 Friday afternoon.

The spill happened sometime around 4 or 5 a.m. when a car ran over a container filled with several gallons of toxic material. The container may have fallen out of a truck.

"Ecology's primary goal is to protect human health and the environment. Basically, if we have a spill of hazmat or oil to the environment, we want to make sure it's properly contained and properly cleaned up so it doesn't impact human health and the environment," said Sam Hunn with WA Department of Ecology.

Hunn says they believe the container was filled with sodium hydroxide. The spill caused no threat to public safety, and the material was contained to the street.
