KENNEWICK, Wash. – A ceremonial
bell rang 40 times, each for a local veteran, who, up until Tuesday morning hadn't
received military funeral honors.
Congress passed a
measure in 2000 that includes military funerals as part of veterans' benefits,
but Sergeant Ryan Homer, U.S. Army, says many veterans still don't receive the
formal demonstration of gratitude.
"My team covers all of Central
Washington, which is eleven counties," Homer says. "In each county we try to do
a veterans memorial tribute for veterans for whatever reason did not receive
military honors. We collect all the names and then we give them the
honors they deserve."
Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 7952 and 5782, American Legion Post 34 and 115, Kennewick police and
firefighters attended the ceremony at the 911 Memorial.
