UMATILLA COUNTY, Ore. -- The next batch of workers cut from the Umatilla Chemical Depot is scheduled for this week.
100 jobs will be cut from the depot, effective Thursday.
The depot has finished destroying stockpiles of chemical weapons as called for under an international treaty, and now it's closing down, preparing to turn the property over to local control.
The depot said in a statement Tuesday the cuts in operations, maintenance and laboratory workers means demolition is ready to begin.
The plant had about 830 employees in late 2011 when if finished work on the stored chemicals. As of Thursday, it will have about 165, and another cut of about 80 workers is expected in March when demolition is complete.
