PORTLAND, Ore. - The Bureau
of Land Management has closed the wild section of the Rogue River in Southern
Oregon because of wildfires.
A spokesman says authorities are worried rescuers
might not be able to reach whitewater rafters who get into trouble.
The spokesman says visibility is so poor
that helicopters couldn't fly in to evacuate an injured rafter.
The 34-mile section of the Rogue from near Galice to near
Agness is renowned for canyon scenery and difficult rapids.
Outfitters and lodges along the river say they're losing business to cancellations.
