HERMISTON, Ore. - A Portland man will spend life in prison for the stabbing death of Corrections Officer Buddy Ray Herron in 2011.

On Wednesday, a Umatilla County judge sentenced Joshua Charles Weeks, 23, to life without the possibility of parole. Weeks pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in April in a bargain to take the death penalty off the table.

In November of 2011, Officer Herron stopped on the side of Highway 11 to help Weeks with his car. Weeks then stabbed Officer Herron multiple times, stole his car, and led other officers on a pursuit. Officers were only able to arrest him after he rolled the vehicle several times.

Prior to the murder, Weeks had committed a string of thefts, burglaries, and robberies in Pendleton and Portland.
