Oregon State Police Investigating Fatal Accident Near Hermiston

HERMISTON, Ore. -- Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal accident that killed one person Wednesday afternoon.

Police say around 1pm, a semi-truck hauling onions was traveling northbound on Westland Road near Ternes Lane when a southbound 2007 Nissan was attempting to pass another vehicle. The Nissan and the semi collided head-on and both caught fire. The fire spread into a nearby field.

The semi-truck driver, 37-year-old Rafael Muniz Sanchez, got out of the truck with minor injuries. He was taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston, where he was treated and released.

The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene. No name have been released for the victim.

Hermiston Fire & Emergency Services responded and controlled the field fire. Both vehicles had extensive fire damage.

The roadway is still closed Wednesday night while the vehicles are being removed from the scene.
