Bullpen Blows Big Lead In Mariners Loss

Updated:

Mark down another blunder for Tom Wilhelmsen.

The Seattle closer blew a big Mariners lead in the ninth inning that eventually led to a second straight walk-off win for the Boston on Thursday, a 8-7 victory for the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a 7-2 deficit. Daniel Nava finished the rally with a game-winning single to the wall in center to score Dustin Pedroia. The Mariners managed to get just one out in the inning.

Wilhelmsen did not record an out, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks. Oliver Perez came in and got a strike out, but also gave up two runs on two hits. Yoervis Medina, the third pitcher of the inning for Seattle, walked one and allowed two hits, including the game-winner.

The bullpen implosion wasted a fantastic start by Felix Hernandez, who went seven innings of one-run ball. Hernandez allowed six hits and two walks, but struck out eight.

Steven Wright got the win for the Red Sox after throwing scoreless ball for the final three innings.
