National Publication Awards Yakima Fire Dept. For Heroic Rescue

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. - The Yakima Fire Department's rescue of a man trapped in a burning home in West Valley is receiving national attention.

Firehouse Magazine has awarded the department, along with firefighters from Engine 92 and 293, the 2012 Heroism and Community Service Award for their bravery and quick response in the rescue last fall.

Back on October 2nd, 2012, firefighters responded to a mobile home engulfed in flames on the 7600 block of Nob Hill Boulevard with a man inside. Firefighters made their way into the burning home, used a chainsaw to cut out a window and rescued the 55-year old man, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

"Our firefighters utilized their ability to think quickly, their training, and their physical strength and saved a life that day," said Yakima Fire Chief Dave Willson. "We're very proud of them. We have an excellent crew of outstanding and highly trained firefighters here in Yakima. This incident, and the recognition it's brought us from Firehouse Magazine, is proof of that."

The national publication receives hundreds of nominations from across the country annually and only presents a limited number of awards each year.
