Yakima Cracks Down on Graffiti

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- In the past few months the city has seen a huge effort to paint over and clean up graffiti.

Volunteers cleaned up almost 4000 buildings and structures with graffiti since the beginning of the year.

The Department of Community Development said their staff is processing new codes to address the physical appearance of the community to keep it beautiful and safe.

One Yakima resident says it's great to see people taking pride in their community.

"I think it brings ownership and responsibility for your community, so you have to take pride in where you live," said Yakima resident, Abigail Drollinger.

Last year, a graffiti abatement program started to take action in cleaning up graffiti stricken areas and buildings.

Volunteers have dedicated more than 3900 hours to cleaning up the city.

This is all an effort to make the city a look as well as it should.

Now this is also part of an effort to keep the public safe.  Some other projects going on are fire and life safety inspections around the city.

These included electrical inspections, property clean up and building repair.
