Spokane Police: Man Accidentally Shoots Himself In The Face

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police say a 21-year-old man accidentally shot himself in the face while handling a semi-automatic handgun in his car with a friend early Monday morning.

The man was taken to the ER at Holy Family Hospital with a gunshot wound above his left eyebrow. Amazingly, he survived, but police say he wasn't cooperating and wouldn't say who shot him or where.

Major Crimes Detectives began investigating and determined the shooting happened inside his car which was parked outside a home in the 1300 block of E. Rowan. Police executed a search warrant and found blood inside the man's car and the home. They say there were five people either in the car or the home at the time, and all of them were interviewed.

"The bullet did not enter [his head], it was recovered from the vehicle he was sitting in at the time,"Lt. Mark Griffiths said.

The man's name has not been released, and it's not clear whether he owns the gun involved. The man was reportedly in surgery with serious injuries Monday. No charges have been filed.

Through a follow up investigation, SPD Major Crimes Detectives determined the shooting occurred at a home in the 1300 block of E. Rowan. A search warrant was executed today and additional evidence related to the shooting was located. Major Crimes Detectives believe the shooting was most likely accidental and self inflicted, however witnesses and victims remain uncooperative, making the investigation more difficult.

At 4:18 am today, a staff member at Holy Family Hospital called to report that the victim of a shooting had come to the ER for treatment. The report indicated that a 21 year old man had sustained a gunshot wound over his left eyebrow.
