Unusual Backpack Found in Selah Parking Lot

Posted: Updated:

SELAH, Wash. - A late night bomb scare in Selah turned out to be harmless, but police say it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Police say they responded to a report of an unusual backpack found in the parking lot of Save-on-Foods around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Police called the Selah Fire Department and from there the two departments thought it was suspicious enough to call the Washington state Patrol Bomb Squad.

Police say it took roughly five to six hours to detonate the backpack and find there was nothing hazardous inside.

"With everything that's happened across our nation, we as law enforcement can't just afford to let it go and go 'well yeah it might be a little suspicious, but were not going to do nothing about it.' We want to make sure that the public is safe," said Sgt. Eric Steen with the Selah Police Department.

Police say the backpack contained tortilla chips, a soda can, and other miscellaneous items which did not relate to bomb making materials. Police say the owner of the backpack still hasn't been identified.
