Crime Tracker: Neighbors Fight Crime In National Night Out

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Neighbors are fighting back against crime tonight. Thousands will take to the streets in tonight's National Night Out event. The barbecues and neighborhood potlucks are a fun time, but they're designed to serve a much greater purpose. The parties allow neighbors to get to know one another.

Law enforcement says creating networks and lines of communication with the people who live next to us are pivotal in helping protect our homes from crime. Lisa Moles is organizing a Night Out event in her neighborhood in Holmberg Square.

She says "Everyone can watch out for everyone because that's basically how we, you know, keep the crime rate down. Everyone keeps an eye out for everyone else than we know it's just a better chance they won't come to our neighborhood." Law enforcement says neighborhood communities and block watch groups are able to provide an essential piece of security.

That's because these groups consist of people who are in our neighborhood everyday. These people know if something in the neighborhood might look out of the ordinary. They know if there's a suspicious vehicle in the area. They can report an open door on a house where they know the family is on vacation.

The Sheriff's Office tells me there are almost 50 parties scheduled for tonight in the County alone. Hopefully, the event will allow neighbors to make connections and create networks that will allow them to keep each other safe and ultimately protect their neighborhood from crime.

The countdown to launch creeps closer and there’s still plenty for self-taught rocket scientist “Mad” Mike Hughes to do: Last-second modifications to his vessel. Pick up his flight suit. Leave enough food for his four cats — just in case anything happens. Hughes is a 61-year-old limo driver who’s spent the last few years building a steam-powered rocket out of salvage parts in his garage.
