Yakima Valley Hops Store Thrives & Plans to Expand

Posted: Updated:
YAKIMA, Wash.--A shared passion has led two young men to business success.

"We wanted to provide a homebrew supply store here in Yakima, considering how many hops are produced here locally," said Jeff Perkins, Co-Owner of Yakima Valley Hops. "We realized that there wasn't really a homebrew shop so we decided to create one."

"When we knew that Yakima Valley Hops was going to work was when we found the space and moved in and it just exploded," said John Snyder, part-owner. "We're getting a lot of good support."

Yakima Valley Hops and Brew Supply is tucked into a warehouse along the 700 Block of North First Avenue. They sell over 40 different kinds of hops, grains, extracts and various types of equipment to produce your own homemade beer, wine and cider.

"Come in say 'hey you guys really need to carry this product,' and then we do," said Snyder. "So we're here as an aid to Yakima Valley."

The owners said their business start up is coexisting with a huge surge in the craft brewing industry. According to the Brewers Association, there's nearly 2,500 operating craft breweries in the United States, a number that's increasing every month.

The owners are also busy working on another project. Extra warehouse space could potentially be a venue for live music, games and just hanging out with friends after work.

"We hope to expand out where we can have musical events or rent it out for any type of event say like a non-profit, a wedding reception or so forth," said Perkins.

"It's a perfect place for this with downtown coming along," said Snyder. "We're in this old cool warehouse."

The owners are also working to get their micro-brewery license so they can offer "brew school." People can whip up their own batch of beer while learning about the craft beer culture.
