Spokane's New Budget Lacks Funds For Spokane's Fireman

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash - Spokane Mayor David Condon recently announced his 2014 budget proposal, and many are glad because there are no cuts being made to the fire department, but, no funds are as of now being added.

If funding is not going to be added that could many things to a major halt, like getting fire service back on the South Hill.

KHQ Local News Reporter Lindsay Nadrich spoke to City Councilman Steve Salvatori who is the Chair for the Fire Task Team and he had this to say, "As a task team we were told not to get too caught up in the dollar part of it. To look for the strategic recommendations and look for the big picture, and let the mayor worry about the dollars."

Mayor Condon's budget doesn't have enough money in it to fulfill the list of requests put together by the task team. If the mayor was to add the nine people back up on the South Hill it would cost an estimated $360,000.

As the situation stands, it is unclear whether service will be restored to Fire House 9 on the South Hill. Police Chief Bobby Williams has stated that service has not slowed since the cut of that house.

This is just a rough cut of the budget, we can expect a more finalized version in October.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It took a jury only a little more than two hours on Wednesday to find Daniel Arteaga guilty for the murder of Kim Schmidt. The prosecution said Arteaga was very jealous that his relationship was ending with Schmidt and she was moving on. They say that's part of the reason why he decided to kill her at the beginning of 2012. The defense disagreed saying that Arteaga was not there when she died and they think she may have even died of suicideMore >>
