Umatilla County Fair In Full Swing

HERMISTON, Wash.- If you're looking for something to do with the family this weekend fair season is officially underway. NBC Right Now visited the Umatilla County Fair on Friday.

"It's absolutely a family event. And as individuals, which you may not have seen for a year, come back and it's immediately the same old friends and it's really a family atmosphere," said Don Miller, the Chairman of the Umatilla County Fair Board.

The people who work at the fair are a family of friends making sure you have a great time. This year due to construction at the high school the fair was shifted around a bit, but it was still as active as ever. There was talk of not having a carnival this year.

"Not only do we have a carnival, we have a larger carnival than we have had in previous years because we now have a larger space," said Miller.

The food vendors had everything from deep fried Twinkies to the classic corn dog. There were a number of animals to meet and greet; plenty of lambs, roosters and the fattest of pigs.

After eating all of that messy fair food and petting all of those animals, the kids were encouraged to keep themselves clean and wash their hands at Sudsy's Barn, a fun interactive washing station complete with talking farm animals.

"The number one person at the fair is that patron that comes in. If we're not serving their needs then we need to investigate what we need to do to fix that," said Miller

As part of the entertainment, this year's fair boasted a big lineup of musical performances on the main stage including country singer Travis Tritt and the band Hoobastank. Fair organizers tell us they're constantly looking to improve and expand their annual event.

"It's our wish that they can come have a great time here and have it done in a safe friendly fun manner," explained Miller.

The Umatilla County Fair runs through Saturday night (Aug 10) in Hermiston.
