New Information: Spokane Valley SWAT Standoff Suspect Identified

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the man who took his own life after a 5-hour SWAT standoff at a Spokane Valley apartment complex as Kendall Neilson, 27.

Police were called to the Sunrise Village apartments off 4th & Sullivan around 5:00 p.m. Sunday, when a woman said she'd been in a domestic dispute with her husband, he was armed and their three kids were inside.

The wife and children were able to get out of the apartment safely, but police say Neilson barricaded himself inside.

"We were told there was a crisis going on and they had police come and knock on all these doors at the apartments and they were telling us to stay inside, or if you have to leave, we're not allowed back on the premises," said Robert Smith, a neighbor who witnessed the standoff.

Smith and his neighbors crowded the police tape, curious about what was happening a little too close to home.

"I was just afraid of getting shot," Smith told KHQ's Kelsey Watts. "This guy could have come to a window and opened fire on a huge crowd of people, but curiosity could have killed us all."

SWAT teams and negotiators were brought in, but Neilson never responded to their commands. At the end of the hours-long stalemate, police broke down his apartment door and sent a robot in first, unsure of what they'd find.  Inside, they found Neilson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Deputy Craig Chamberlin with the Spokane County Sheriff's Office said it's not immediately clear what the husband and wife were originally fighting about. He said police never fired a shot, and the major crimes team continues to investigate.

UPDATE: The suspect who was found dead is identified as 27-year-old Kendall Neilson. The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office reports that Neilson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

UPDATE FROM THE SPOKANE VALLEY POLICE DEPT. AND THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Sunday, August 11, 2013, at 5:00 p.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 15600 block of East 4th Ave. on a Domestic Violence call. The complainant told 911 she and her 27-year-old husband had some type of dispute, he was armed with a weapon and that he was threatening suicide.

With this information, deputies made certain that the female caller and her three children were safely out of the apartment. Deputies then contacted other tenants in the area to ensure their safety.

Deputies attempted to contact the suspect unsuccessfully.  With information he was possibly armed, the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiators were utilized as they have specialized training dealing with barricaded subjects.

After several unsuccessful attempts contacting the suspect, the decision was made to enter the apartment using a robot. The robot did locate the male deceased inside the apartment at approximately 10:00 p.m. Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating the incident.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office will provide identification and cause of death after an autopsy is completed.

UPDATE: A man was found dead inside a home at 4th and Sullivan after a 5-hour standoff with SWAT Sunday, according to a spokesperson for the Spokane County Sheriff's Department. The spokesperson said Major Crimes detectives are taking over the investigation.

Officials say they responded to a domestic violence call at the home Sunday afternoon. They learned one man inside the home was armed and not responding to police.

When SWAT entered the home Sunday night they found one man deceased.
