Open House to Help Decide Future of Umatilla Chemical Depot

HERMISTON, Ore. - The future of the Umatilla Chemical Depot could be a little clearer after an open house Monday night.

Morrow and Umatilla County planning directors held a joint open house Monday to give the public and planning staff the chance to ask questions about the depot's future.

The planning directors also presented the current concept plan for the land.

"7500 acres will go to the Oregon National Guard . A little over 5,000 acres are set asides for a wildlife habitat area, and 1,000 acres on the Umatilla County side for industrial and about the same in Morrow County," said Umatilla Co. Planning Director, Tamra Mabbott.

The open house runs until 8 p.m. at the Stafford Hansell Government Center in Hermiston. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Mabbott says the next step will be to start a formal hearing process. A decision could be made by the first of the year.
