Cougars Resume Preseason Camp in Martin Stadium

Posted: Updated:

PULLMAN, Wash. – Following Monday's day off, the Cougar football team resumed preseason camp with a two-hour practice in helmets and shoulder pads on Rodgers Field and in Martin Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Washington State practiced in Pullman for the first time this camp after spending the previous 10 practices in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Cougars worked through its regular practice plan of individuals and 1-vs.-1 battles, before going into a couple periods of special teams that focused on kickoff coverage. Sandwiched in between the two special teams segments, WSU worked through its daily 7-vs.-7 session while the defensive and offensive lines matched up in a running game drill.

In team, redshirt-junior quarterback Connor Halliday operated the first series and picked up a big gain early on. Halliday slid to his right and hit junior wideout Isiah Myers in stride, allowing him to streak up the sideline before fellow wideout Kristoff Williams provided a big block, allowing Myers to cut back inside the 20 and go untouched for a touchdown. The defense countered a couple plays later by stopping sophomore running back Teondray Caldwell on third-and-short. Halliday came right back by hitting junior running back Marcus Mason out of the backfield for a first down. The final play of the drive saw redshirt-sophomore running back Jeremiah Laufasa take a handoff and get stuffed up the middle but he bounced outside and outraced a Cougar defender to the left corner of the end zone for the score.

Redshirt-freshman Austin Apodaca quarterbacked the next series and picked up a big gain midway through the drive, hitting redshirt-junior running back Theron West out of the backfield who scampered up the right sideline and inside the 20. The defense answered with a sack from sophomore Destiny Vaeao and then senior cornerback Damante Horton made the play of the day, a diving interception of Apodaca in the back corner of the end zone. The offense came right back with a touchdown run by Laufasa and an Apodaca touchdown strike to Myers to clinch the win for the offense.

WSU continues preseason camp Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Pullman.
