PENDLETON, Ore. - A fire burning in the Greenhorn Unit of the North Fork John Day Wilderness Area near Vinegar Hill is growing quickly.

The Vinegar Fire has grown to an estimated 150 acres.

The fire is about nine miles southwest of Granite, Oregon and was first reported at 11:00 AM Wednesday morning.

The blaze is burning in steep, rugged terrain in a remote area on south end of the Umatilla National Forest. The fire is actively burning in sub-alpine fir stands with heavy dead and down fuels, making short runs with some torching and spotting.

Ground resources are monitoring the fire from a distance. Aerial resources supporting the fire include three single engine air tankers, two heavy tankers, two helicopters, and an air attack lead plane.
