High Turnout, High Hopes for Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The 2013 Whitworth football season will officially get underway this weekend as the players report to campus on Friday and suit up for practice for the first time on Saturday.

The Pirates, picked fourth in the 2013 Northwest Conference coaches poll, expect 109 student-athletes to report to campus on Friday.  The summer training camp will begin with a team barbeque for the coaches, players and parents.

Following physicals and equipment checkout early on Saturday, the first official practice will take place at 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon on the football practice field behind the Whitworth Fieldhouse.  The first practice with full pads will be on August 21st and the first double day will come on August 22nd.

The 2013 NWC coaches poll mirrors the final standings from 2012 with Linfield atop the ranking, followed by Pacific Lutheran and Willamette.  Behind Whitworth in the poll is Pacific (Ore.), Lewis & Clark and Puget Sound.

The total of 109 players checking in on Friday is the largest total in head coach John Tully's 19 years leading the Bucs.  Whitworth welcomes back 16 starters (seven on offense, nine on defense) from 2012's 7-3 campaign.

The Pirates will play their first game of 2013 on September 7th in the Pine Bowl against the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.).  Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm.
