Sunnyside City Council Candidates Drawing Lots to Break Tie

Posted: Updated:

SUNNYSIDE, Wash.-- Two candidates tied for second place in the Sunnyside City Council primary will draw lots to decide who gets to move on to the general election.

The candidates, Spencer Martin and Victor Ochoa, will draw random numbers between one and ten.

Whoever gets the lowest number will advance into the general election to face incumbent councilman Don Vlieger.

The race was incredibly close both Martin and Ochoa are tied with 56 votes.

As for Vlieger, he got only 57 votes.

That's just one more than either of his challengers.

"This just goes to show you how important your vote is, because one vote can really make a difference," said Yakima County Auditor Corky Mattingly.

The auditor's office says the draw is just one of many ways to decide a tie.

A coin toss decided a race in Tieton a few years ago.

They haven't scheduled a time for the drawing yet.

They have to wait until the election results are certified, which won't happen until August 20th.

The auditor's office says they plan to hold the drawing as soon as possible, so the advancing candidate can start campaigning for the general election.
