GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A company that sold a lumber mill in the town of Pilot Rock couldn't find anyone to buy the neighboring property - a dump covered with 20 acres of old tree bark and sawdust from decades of milling.

So, eventually, Kinzua Resources just walked away.

The dump catches fire periodically, but the company has informed the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality it has dissolved and has no assets to pay for covering the dump with dirt or any of the fines already levied.

To get their attention, the state is taking the unusual step of also holding the five principals of the company individually liable for nearly $800,000 in new fines announced Friday.

A company lawyer did not immediately respond to a phone call for comment.
