Hermiston Dispatch Center to Merge with Umatilla County

HERMISTON, Ore. - Who answers the phone when you call 911 in Hermiston is about to change. That's because the city council there voted unanimously to consolidate their dispatch services with Umatilla County.

This change all comes down to money and the bottom line is an estimated $350,000 in savings for the city of Hermiston.

On top of money it will also help with efficiency. Right now there can be some confusion when people call 911 from just outside the city limits. Those calls are routed to the Hermiston dispatch center then transferred to Umatilla County's in Pendleton.

"There are two dispatch centers working together and sometimes there's call transferring in some small cases there could be some improvement in response time for the fire department," said Captain Travis Enyon with the Hermiston Police Department.

The money saved will come from not having to upgrade some equipment and potentially reduced staffing.

The merger is expected to happen next summer.
