Firefighters Across the Region Unite For a Good Cause

UNION GAP, Wash.-- Saturday in Union Gap firefighters from all over the area joined together to raise money for muscular dystrophy.

Most people avoid panhandlers and solicitors, but on Saturday it was all for a good cause.

"We are here today to raise money for MD, it goes to a lot of different things, help kids go to camp, goes to research, different shots and really just finding a way to find a cure for the disease," said Firefighter Tyler Abhold.

Firefighters from Yakima, Union Gap and East Valley joined together to raise money for muscular dystrophy research.

They said working together helps a lot with the cause.

"It makes things a lot easier, it kind of spreads the work load around and it's good to be with our neighbors and help each other out," said firefighter Nick Sloan.

It is a partnership between the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Those working said even though it is their day off, they are more than happy to help out.

"It's nice to be able to take out time that we are not on shift, and to show the community that we care and that we are giving back and enjoy helping people, like the MDA, to raise money for a good cause," Sloan said.

And when asked about those who donate, firefighters said every little bit counts.

"That takes a little extra dedication from them, we got a lot of help, a lot of partnerships from the departments for help, I think it's going very, very well," said Abhold.

The fundraiser is part of a national effort, which started almost 60-years-ago.
