Van Fire Sparks Brush Blaze Off of I-82 Near Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. - It was a busy afternoon for area firefighters as two blazes sparked within an hour of each other on Sunday.

A van along I-82 caught fire around 2:30 p.m. A Pendleton man, Jason Clark, said he stopped when he saw a woman standing along the roadway while the van was steaming. He said they heard a pop and within seconds the van went up in flames.

Clark said a water truck showed up and they were able to keep the blaze from spreading too much, for a little while.

"When the tires blew, it threw burning tires up into the field and re-ignited the field fire and there was no fighting it from that point. We just didn't have the faculties to fight that blaze," said Clark.

From there the fire quickly spread and multiple agencies were called in to help fight it. By early evening the blaze was under control.

Clark told NBC Right Now the people in the van were a woman, her mother and her son. They were on a road trip coming from Colorado. Clark gave them his car as that family lost everything in the van today and their trip is not quite over.
