UPDATE: 12-Year-Old Girl Describes Frightening Bear Attack

Posted: Updated:

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - A 12-year-old girl who was mauled by a black bear in northern Michigan last week says she feared for her life during the attack.

Abby Wetherell tells The Associated Press she thought she was going to die as the animal clawed her on a dirt road near her grandfather's hunting cabin in Wexford County.

But after attacking her twice, the bear went away. Abby was flown to a hospital in Traverse City, where 100 stitches were needed to close wounds on her left thigh and back.

She was released Sunday and is walking on crutches. She says she's still in pain but expects to be fine.

State conservation officers shot a bear about 2 miles away Sunday and are doing tests but don't know if it's the same one.

PREVIOUS STORY:

CADILLAC, Mich. (AP) - The grandfather of a 12-year-old girl mauled by a bear says she's sore but smiling after returning home from a hospital.

Dave Wetherell tells the Detroit Free Press (http://on.freep.com/1cZfSe7 ) that Abigail Wetherell is a strong person who realizes "she was in a lot of danger and she beat it." Abigail was treated for abrasions and puncture wounds before being released from a Traverse City hospital Sunday, three days after the attack in Wexford County, near Cadillac.

Officers from the Department of Natural Resources killed a bear early Sunday after responding to complaints about a bear in Selma Township. The DNR is trying to determine if it's the bear that attacked Abigail.

Wetherell believes it may be larger than the one that hurt his granddaughter who was running on his property.
