Second Oregon Home Burns in Government Flats Fire

Posted: Updated:

THE DALLES, Ore. - Firefighters say a second home has now burned in the fire burning outside The Dalles.

Firefighters say the winds over the flanks of Mount Hood are making it difficult for them to control the Government Flat Fire Complex.

Firefighters say the flames have now doubled to 10 square miles, or about 5000 acres. Two of about 50 evacuated homes in the area about 10 miles southwest of the The Dalles have burned.

The fire has come within a quarter-mile of the water treatment plant serving the city's 12,000 residents, but crews are stationed there to protect the facility.

A community meeting is set for Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue headquarters at 1400 West 8th St. in The Dalles to discuss the situation.
