Sawyer Returns To Chiefs Coaching Staff

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Spokane Chiefs have announced that former captain and assistant coach Kevin Sawyer will return to the organization as a part-time assistant coach for the 2013-14 season. Sawyer will assist with player development and player evaluation, and help in all coaching areas while working with the team on a monthly basis. He filled a similar role last season while Head Coach Don Nachbaur was an assistant coach for Canada's World Junior Hockey Championships.

"I am extremely excited to have Kevin back on our staff.  He is a quality person who brings tremendous knowledge and experience," Nachbaur said. "He is truly a Chief at heart and will do whatever it takes to help make our club better."

After playing as a Chief for three years, ultimately as captain of the 1994-95 team as a 20-year-old, Sawyer played professionally for eight years. He holds the club record for career penalty minutes with 989 in 176 games played. Sawyer assisted with the Chiefs from 2004 to 2006, and again last season.

"I'm just very excited to be involved and be a part of it all," Sawyer said. "I can't wait to get going and help out any way I can."

In addition to coaching, Sawyer has spent recent years as a color commentator for Spokane Chiefs broadcasts on SWX and WHL broadcasts on Root Sports.

He joins a coaching staff including Nachbaur, Goaltending Coach Ryan Cyr, Athletic Trainer/Conditioning Coach Todd Daniels, and newly hired Assistant Coach Scott Burt. As announced in July, Burt joins the staff after a 13-year professional playing career, during which he won the Kelly Cup, the ECHL championship, three times.

Ticket packages for the 2013-14 season are currently on sale.  The Chiefs will open the regular season on the road against Tri-City on Saturday, September 21 with Bud Light Opening Night taking place on Saturday, September 28 as they host the Americans.  Contact a Chiefs Account Executive at (509) 535-PUCK.
