New Richland Statue Memorializes Colonel Franklin T. Matthias

RICHLAND, Wash.-- The legacy of Colonel Franklin T. Matthias, the Commander of Construction for the Manhattan Project, is now preserved in a statue outside the Richland Public Library.

President Roosevelt asked Matthias to find an area for plutonium production in WWII.

Matthias oversaw the building of the Hanford site and Richland.

Matthias was known for his strong leadership and dedication to the development of the area.

"It's about time to honor this gentleman who was instrumental in making Hanford what it is today and making Richland what it is today. He's really the founding father of the area," said Karen Miles, project manager.

A Richland sculpture artist crafted the copper statue.

The city will hold a dedication ceremony for the statue this Saturday at 11am.

Matthias family members from around the world will attend the special event.
