"Safe Houses" In Pendleton Could Help Prevent Assault

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, Oregon- The recent assault along the river parkway has many Pendleton residents questioning their safety. The topic was discussed Monday night during a town hall meeting and one Pendleton resident who was at that meeting has a plan to help people feel safer.

Del Lucas is a Pendleton resident and a legal investigator. His house is right along the city river parkway and he has seen his share of problems with transients around his neighborhood. Lucas says he wants to mark some homes along the trail as "safe". He has told many of his neighbors that if they have a bad encounter along the parkway, to run to his house for protection until the police can arrive. He admits, incidents like the assault of Karen Lange, is something his city doesn't see very often.

"People tend to let their guard down in a society that is so close structured as this one," explained Lucas. "That makes it fairly easy for a wolf to come and lay with the sheep."

Lucas went on to say, he thinks spending money on more surveillance cameras would not make for a safer parkway and that change is something that has to start with the community.
