Local Unemployment Numbers are Higher than Washington Average

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, Wash. - Washington's latest unemployment numbers show that we're doing a little worse locally than statewide.

Just under 7% of the population is unemployed in Washington. Breaking those numbers down locally, Benton county has 8.1% without jobs, Franklin County has 8.8% and Yakima County has 8%.

These jobless numbers are higher than a month ago but fairly stable, all things considered. The data shows there were fewer seasonal jobs this summer in the Tri-City area and that likely helped add to the unemployment increase.

"I thought it was a little bit easier but it's hard. There's a lot of competition out there. So basically like everybody says here, just try to work and not give up," said job seeker Maria Villafana.

"I've applied for more than 150 jobs, I don't have the exact number but it's well in that area. I probably get an interview about 30% of the time," said another job hunter, Shelley Sump.
