Famous Actor Visits Yakima to Speak About Sobriety

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.--A Tony Award winning actor visited Yakima Thursday to give others some words of encouragement.

Ben Vereen will be speaking to community members and people in drug and alcohol treatment programs about his struggle with sobriety.

The staff at Sundown M. Ranch said opiates are becoming a big problem in the area.  In 2006, 6 percent of patients claimed opiates were their primary drug. Today it's more than 40 percent.

"We're in big trouble, especially with our young people," said Vereen. "We have got to stand up now more than ever to let them know that sobriety is available, that recovery is available."

Vereen spearheaded his own organization called "Celebrities For A Drug Free America," which raises money for drug rehab centers and educational programs.
