Yakima School District Approves Budget for 2013-2014

YAKIMA, Wash.--The Yakima School District has approved their budget for the year and it stands at nearly $180 million.

The superintendent said they'll have to dip into reserves to cover their expenditures because the district hasn't cut any programs or staff. The district also had to account for a lot of one time expenses like high school science books and common core standards.

The superintendent said if money gets tight, they'll just have to adjust for the next school year.
"Should we have an emergency, then we would have to go back to the drawing board and we would have to alter programs," said Elaine Beraza, the Yakima School District Superintendent. "We wouldn't cut the number of teachers mid-year for kids, but we'd figure it out. For example, we might hold in advance our textbook adoption and there would be things that you wouldn't have to do or you could put off for a year."

Beraza said the school board feels good about the budget and that cuts won't be necessary.
