Jackson's RBI Single Lifts Indians

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Joe Jackson's game-winning hit earned him his first shaving cream pie to the face in his young career, and he wasn't complaining.

Jackson's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored teammate Marcus Greene from third and lifted the Spokane Indians to a 6-5 victory over the Tri-City Dust Devils in the homestand finale at Avista Stadium.

Greene led off the 10th with a double to right field, and Jordan Akins' ground out moved Greene to third and prompted Tri-City to intentionally walk Janluis Castro, who reached base safely five times despite only managing one hit. Jackson laced the first pitch he saw to right field, and Dust Devils outfielder Julian Yan attempted a sliding catch but was unable to make the play.

"Finally one fell for me," Jackson said after wiping some of the shaving cream off his face. "I've been hitting it hard the past week or so. That was worth it. Just a great win overall by the team. Everyone contributed, especially the bullpen."

Ricardo Rodriguez, Abel De Los Santos and John Straka combined to allow one run in five innings of relief work, replacing Ryne Slack, who struck out eight in five innings and allowed three earned runs. "The pitching has been fantastic," Indians manager Tim Hulett said. "Even Slack tonight, not his best stuff but got us through five innings where we were kind of thin in the bullpen."

The Indians trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth until Gabriel Roa's line drive back up the middle deflected off pitcher Trent Daniel's glove and scooted past the shortstop, scoring Ryan Cordell, who led off the inning with a ground ball single to center field.

Roa, batting in the No. 9 hole, led the team with four RBI and collected two hits, including a double.

The Indians' win gives Spokane a 34-33 overall record, 14-15 in the second half and one game behind the Everett Aquasox. Spokane heads to Vancouver for a three-game stint, then back home to play Everett for three games and finally back to Everett for another three games to close out the 2013 regular season.
