Woman Says Man Accused Of Killing Baby Hid Gun

Posted: Updated:

MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A woman who said she grew up with a man accused of fatally shooting a baby says the man asked if he could hide his gun under her couch.

Danielle Williams testified that De'Marquise (deh-mahr-KEES') Elkins came to her home and made the request the day after 13-month-old Antonio Santiago was fatally shot in his stroller. Williams said Elkins' mother and sister came to retrieve the gun later in the day.

Elkins is charged with murder in the baby's slaying. Prosecutors say the child was killed during a robbery attempt. The baby's mother, Sherry West, was shot in the leg.

Elkins' mother and sister are charged with evidence tampering.

The trial is being held in Marietta because of the publicity the case garnered in the spring.
