Tuel to Start Week One, Make NFL History

Posted: Updated:

BUFFALO, New York – Former Washington State quarterback Jeff Tuel could be making NFL history in week one if he gets the start for the Buffalo Bills.

Doug Marrone announced to reporters on Monday that due to the injuries of first round pick EJ Manuel and veteran Kevin Kolb, Tuel would be the team's starter.

"Right now we're planning on Jeff Tuel playing the first game and we're working with EJ to get back as quickly as possible," Marrone said Monday. "Right now that's how we're going about planning on doing it until we know more about where EJ is."

If Tuel gets the started like expected it would mark the first time in the common draft era that an undrafted rookie quarterback would start the season opener.

Tuel took most of the snaps on Saturday in Buffalo's loss to Washington. Tuel finished 10-17 for 63 yards and no touchdowns.

The Bills also signed free-agent quarterback Matt Leinart on Sunday as another option at quarterback.
