Rise in Attempted and Actual Honda Thefts in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash.- In the last nine days Kennewick police have received eight reports of Honda thefts and attempted thefts from all over the city.

Six of the cars are Honda Accords and two are Civics. Accord are the most stolen car in the entire country, according to the National Insurance crime Bureau.

"That's shocking to me actually," said Andrea Cook, the owner of a 1994 Honda, "I've never had a problem with getting it broken into but that's kind of scary," she said.

According to Kennewick Police, five of the reports were attempted thefts that left extensive damage and the other three cars were actually stolen and they have not been found.

All eight of the vehicles are 1990 to 2000 model Accords and Civics.

"Well Hondas being stolen is not unique to Kennewick, it's not unique to the state of Washington, it is the number one stolen car in the United States," said Kennewick Police Sergeant Ken Lattin.

Kennewick Police said the thefts are happening all over the city. Six were in parking lots and two were parked on the street.

They are also warning people to be cautious of auto part sales online that seem too good to be true.

"As long as there's a market for it people are willing to just ignore, turn a blind eye to the potential that it might be stolen. People are going to keep stealing because they can keep selling parts," added Lattin.

The only suspects so far are two Hispanic males seen running away from a vehicle on Metaline Pl. last Wednesday.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious activity right away.

"I'm going to park under street lights when I'm out at night at least and keep my car closer to the house rather than parked on the street or anything like that, keep a really close eye on it," said Cook.
