Every spring, as the salmon smolts are going to sea, they are swept over Wanawish Dam at Horn Rapids on the Yakima River. The white water causes them to become dazed and confused and they will float up to the surface to make an easy meal for gulls, terns, cormorants, and these pelicans that end up spending a month or more feeding before the spring run-off concludes.
