SWX Beat Clicks - Aug. 29, 2013

Much of the focus this preseason has been on former WSU quarterback Jeff Tuel -- and deservedly so, as he's set to become the first undrafted rookie QB to start a season opener since at least 1950 -- but teammate and former EWU WR Brandon Kaufman has been making his mark as well. According to Chris Brown of buffalobills.com, Kaufman has played 55 offensive snaps in the team's first three games, sixth among his position. However, Kaufman has yet to play a snap on any special teams.

Also, the Bills tweeted out earlier today that newly signed Matt Leinart, not Tuel, will start the Bills' final preseason game. Buffalo takes on Detroit at 4:00 p.m.

In one of the funnier practical jokes I've seen in quite some time, an Arizona high school football team pranked its QB by playing dead the instant the ball was snapped. The quarterback looks around, stunned and dejected, and it's hilarious.

The Winnipeg Jets are pleased to announce they have agreed to terms with former Spokane Chiefs captain Brenden Kichton on a three-year, two-way, entry level contract with an average annual value of $620,000.

Spokane lost its third straight game, falling to Everett 4-2. Former Gonzaga Bulldog Tyler Olson, a 2013 seventh-round pick by the Mariners, went the final 2 1/3 innings for his first career save.

Felix Hernandez had one of his roughest outings, allowing eight earned runs in just 3 innings pitched. Leonys Martin drove in four runs for the Rangers. The M's have lost six in a row.

In some expected-but-still-awesome news, Mariners top prospect Taijuan Walker was called up from Triple-A Tacoma and will make his MLB debut Friday at Houston. Walker is a hard-throwing righty with swing-and-miss stuff who should be a fixture in the rotation alongside King Felix for years to come. It's still early, but he's a really good player.

In the 2012 opener, Mead blew out U-High 43-10. At practice on Wednesday, we spoke with some players and coaches who think that the hard work they did in the offseason will translate to a better product on the field Sept. 5 when the Titans again open up their season against the Panthers. There's a slideshow, too.

We were at a few different Greater Northern League football practices this week, and we put together a slideshow highlighting some of the great stuff we saw. Check out pictures from East Valley, West Valley and Pullman High School.
