PENDLETON, Ore.-- The search for a transient suspected in a murder and also an assault along a river trail in Pendleton is finally over.

Police arrested the man with a hidden identity at the Pendleton Convention Center Wednesday night.

The community of Pendleton is breathing a sigh of relief after the arrest of 23-year-old Lukah Pobzeb Chang, previously thought to be named Danny Wu.

After a yearlong investigation and a community on high alert to find the killer, Chang is finally behind bars.

Police found Chang on the roof of the building hiding behind a HVAC unit.

Chang is charged with the murder of a teen girl last year and the attempted murder of a woman earlier this month.

His false identity, Danny Wu, turned up no leads in the investigation.

"He was anonymous and that's a scary proposition when you start thinking about the only thing we have that we can put out there to try to keep the community safe is a picture," said Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts.

Because of that picture, two women called 911 Wednesday night after they spotted Chang in a back room of the center.

Danielle Swanson and Sally DuMont found him in a chair and called for help.

"I absolutely was scared and knew exactly who it was and knew what I had to do and thankfully Sally was able to call the cops and I ran for help," said Swanson.

Following the tip, police surrounded the building and arrested Chang.

Chang was described by people who saw him taken away as disturbed, showing no remorse.

"It was vacant. His face was unemotional, totally unemotional," said Kathy Marshall, Pendleton Convention Center manager.

Police say DNA found at the murder scene and the brutal assault along the river walk matched. But they can't confirm it was Chang's DNA quite yet.

A sample was sent to the state crime lab Thursday and results are expected back in a week.

KENNEWICK: Good news for all of you bargain shoppers out there, Goodwill is opening a brand new store in Kennewick sometime next year. Thanks to a 3.1 million dollar loan and lots of planning, a very large patch of dirt will be home to a 20,000 square foot Goodwill; half warehouse and processing, half retail. The Kennewick store will be closing, however. You can still say, out with your old couches, TV's and clothing, and *into someone else's hands, just at a different location. ...More >>
