SPOKANE, Wash. -

Whitworth men's basketball coach Matt Logie has announced the addition of seven new players who comprise the incoming class for 2013-14, in addition to a new assistant coach for this upcoming season.

All seven of the incoming Pirates will come in with freshman eligibility.

"We are very excited about the new student-athletes that will be joining our program," Logie said.  "Each one of them brings unique abilities, backgrounds, and skill sets to our team and I'm looking forward to integrating them into an already-established championship culture."

The seven new players are listed in alphabetical order.

Kionte Brown is a 6-1 guard from Shadle Park High School in Spokane.  He was unable to play his senior year because of a knee injury, but averaged 14.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game as a junior, earning Second Team All-Greater Spokane League honors in 2012.  He has served as a co-captain for the Highlanders.

Gabe Carter is a 6-4 guard from Sequim High School (Sequim, Wash.).  Carter helped lead his team to a sixth place finish in the Washington 2A State Tournament, the school's best finish in 25 years, and a final record of 21-5.  He averaged 12 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.6 assists, earning First Team All-Olympic League and First Team All-Olympic Peninsula.  He finished his career with school records for career rebounds and career assists.

Christian Jurlina is a 6-5 guard who comes to Whitworth from Sydney Boys School in Australia.  Christian helped his school earn back to back championships in Sydney's Private Schools conference in 2011 and 2012.  He averaged 19.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, four steals and three assists in his final season.  In addition, Christian played for the New South Wales U20 team, averaging 22.5 points per game in a series of contests against the Chinese U17 national team.  Christian was also a member of the North Sydney Bears Club basketball squad.

Kenny Love is a 6-1 guard from Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, California.  Kenny led the Crusaders to the California Division 4 state championship game after CNHS defeated Archbishop Riordan 73-66 in the Northern California Division 4 final.  The team finished the year 32-4.  He averaged 12 points per game, earning First Team All-North Bay League.  As a junior he averaged more than 15 points per contest and was named the North Bay League MVP.

Riley Moreen is a 6-7 forward from Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.  He was chosen as a First Team All-Inland Empire League honoree after averaging 10.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots during his senior season.  He also garnered First Team All-District One honors.

Drew Sears, from Stanwood (Wash.) High School, is a 6-10 post player.  Drew helped Stanwood finish 18-6 last season when he averaged 8.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game.  He was chosen to the All-Wesco Second Team.

Austin Wood is a 5-11 guard who comes from Broomfield (Colo.) High School by way of Hawaii Pacific University, where he redshirted the 2012-13 season.  He will be a sophomore with freshman eligibility.  As a senior he led Broomfield to a 25-2 final record, the most wins in school history.  He was the Northern League Player of the Year and an All-State honoree after he averaged 13 points and five assists per contest.

"This is a very exciting time for our program and I look forward to seeing how these young men impact the future of Whitworth basketball, as well as the entire campus community," Logie said.

Whitworth also welcomes Patrick Frost to the coaching staff.  Frost takes over for Jase Wambold, who left the Pirates to become the head coach at North Central High School in Spokane.

Frost has spent the last three years as an assistant coach with the Emerald City Basketball Academy U17 Elite Boys team.  He previously was a Mercer Island High School varsity assistant coach from 2007 through 2010.  Frost is a 2004 graduate of Mercer Island, the same alma mater of Logie.  As a senior at MIHS, Frost led the Islanders to a final record of 24-4 and a 15-0 in the Kingco League.  He was voted first Team All-Kingco and Washington Preps second Team All-State.  In college he played at the University of Redlands from 2004-2006, helping his Bulldogs team set an NCAA all-division points-per-game record.

"Coach Frost and I have a long association and I'm excited to add him to our coaching staff," Logie said.  "I know our student-athletes and staff will both benefit greatly from his addition."

Whitworth will officially open the 2013-14 schedule against Trinity University (Texas) on November 15 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash.  The Pirates are coming off of back to back 26-4 seasons under Logie, including a pair of Northwest Conference titles and appearances in the NCAA Division III Sweet 16.
