Workers Celebrate Labor Day at Picnic in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Labor Day is a celebration of America's workers and on Monday local union representatives labored away at a free picnic for the people of the Tri-Cities.

The picnic at Columbia Park in Kennewick included live music, a bouncy house for the kids, and fun activities for the family. There was a long line of people ready to get some free food. Burgers, salads, and all kinds of side dishes were served up.

The workers tell NBC Right Now they want the community to remember the true meaning behind the holiday.

"Things that people take for granted in this country like an 8 hour work day, maternity leave, child labor laws...those were all fought and people died for...labor fought for those," said volunteer Fred Rumsey.

This is the second year the unions have held the Labor Day picnic. They expected thousands of people at the park Monday and they hope it will be even bigger next year.
