Kennewick Teachers Approve New Contract

Posted: Updated:
KENNEWICK, Wash.

Kennewick teachers say their proposed new contract passed the test, and they voted to approve it Thursday night.

An estimated 150 teachers met at Kamiakin High School to discuss the new wording and take a vote. The new 3-year-deal included extra hours for special education teachers and more academic freedom.

While teachers were not able to negotiate a cost of living increase, they are happy with an alternative.

"We do have some extra hours that the teachers can go to different professional development things and then they can get paid for them. So extra work but extra pay," said Kennewick Teacher's Association President Teri Staudinger.

Staudinger says the new contract won't have any effect on class sizes. The vote was almost unanimous.
