Crime Tracker: SPD Launches Neighborhood eLert System

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Police Department is pushing a new alert system to warn people of crime happening in their neighborhood. Citizens have been able to sign up for email alerts, known as eLerts, from the department for quite some time. The eLerts include press releases and monthly newsletters from the department. However, new this week is the neighborhood eLert, which allows SPD to send information to specific neighborhoods.

The neighborhood eLert is different from other alerts because it's not information that would warrant a city wide public announcement. However, it is something that would be useful for people within a specific neighborhood. For example, this week, SPD sent out a neighborhood eLert to the West Central neighborhood about thieves breaking into 6 garages. It's not an alert one might care about if they live across town. However, it is something they'd want to know about if they live in the West Central neighborhood and the chance of being victimized is far greater.

Neighbors can sign up for the eLerts on the Spokane Police Department's home page, SpokanePolice.org. SPD is also relying on C.O.P.S. shops and neighborhood watch groups to push out the information to people on its email distribution lists.
