RICHLAND, Wash. - Feeding the hungry with the help of farmer's markets is the goal of a new program run by Fields of Grace.
This is the first year for the project and more than 14,000 lbs. of fresh produce have been donated so far.
NBC Right Now visited the market at the Parkway Friday in Richland as volunteers walked around to vendor booths handing out boxes. Whatever food they don't sell they donate, then Fields of Grace takes that directly to the food banks.
"If you don't have another market to take it to, even so, you brought it to the market. You don't have the storage for it, for instance, I didn't. I didn't want to take it home so I'd give it away. So this is a blessing," said Market Manager Kathy Hanson.
Fields of Grace does this at each local farmer's market but only picks up from Pasco during their Saturday market.
